Asraa Albonajem, LCSW
Refuge in Healing was born from my professional expertise as a therapist in Dearborn, MI and my personal journey as an Iraqi refugee. My own path to safety was shaped by loss, displacement, and the challenge of acculturation. These experiences became the foundation for my commitment to creating a space where others can heal from their own challenging life experiences.
As someone who has navigated the complexities of diaspora, I understand how survival becomes primary while emotional and mental well-being often takes a backseat. I also know that healing requires more than simply feeling safe; it calls for being seen, understood, and honored across all of your intersections—including race, culture, gender, and sexuality.
I created Refuge in Healing not only to serve those impacted by trauma, depression, and grief but also to extend care to anyone seeking wellness and a sanctuary in their healing journey. In the same way I found refuge and rebuilt my own life, my mission is to offer a space where others can feel supported in doing the same.

My Experience
From a young age, I knew I wanted to become a therapist and feel very blessed to be in this role. After earning my Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan in 2019, I began practicing as a clinical therapist and have been working in the field for over 7 years.
As an Arab woman, I understand how culture, identity, and family dynamics can deeply shape our emotional experiences. As a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), I’ve been intentional about the care I provide—ensuring it is both culturally sensitive and grounded in effective, evidence-based approaches such as EMDR, DBT, and Brainspotting.
I also understand that there are unique challenges faced by marginalized and disadvantaged individuals, and I am dedicated to bridging that gap with my knowledge and expertise. My passion has always been to help those who are most marginalized in our society as they navigate complex and often painful mental health challenges.
In my work, I provide support for, but am not limited to:
- Teens and adults dealing with mild to severe mental health challenges
- Trauma survivors across diverse backgrounds, including LGBTQIA+ communities
- Survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault
- Refugees and immigrants
In every setting—whether through case management, community advocacy, or psychotherapy—I have remained grounded in trauma-informed care and a deep belief in the inherent resilience of my clients. I am continually inspired by the dedication my clients bring to their healing, and I hope to be of support throughout your wellness journey.
